Even before the recession hit, a significant number of Montana teens were in trouble. The annual Kids Count report compiled by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that between 2000 and 2007, the state saw a 43 percent jump in the number of teens who didn't attend school or work. That means about 10 percent of the state's teens now fall into that category, Jessica Mayrer reported in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
"Kids have been escalating for a number of years in behaviors that aren't healthy," said Carol Townsend, president of the Greater Gallatin United Way. "As a community, we're missing the boat."
