After a research trip off the coasts of Vancouver Island and Queen Charlotte Islands last month revealed a myriad of ocean life threatenedby commercial fishing, Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans plans to designate 88,000 square kilometers (nearly 34,000 square miles) of water off the Canadian coast as the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area, reports Judith Lavoie of the Times Colonist. This zoning would control what types of fishing, shipping and development could occur in the region and encourage sustainable use. The area would stretch from the Campbell River on Vancouver Island to the border of Alaska, and would be the first ocean management area on the Pacific Coast.
