Timothy Egan has an interesting post in the New York Times' Outposts blog, entitled "Methland vs. Mythland." He points out that the meth epidemic in small towns is in no small way tied to falling incomes and the sustained loss of good jobs paying family wages. His subject is journalist Nick Reding's book “Methland: the Death and Life of an American Small Town.” Although Reding did his research in a small town in Iowa, the meth epidemic and the economic dislocations can be felt at small towns across the West and the rest of the country as well.
