Seattle-area human services face massive cuts

Health clinics, disease prevention programs, food banks and other social services face massive cuts in the Seattle area unless voters approve new taxes in the fall, King County government officials say. They're wondering whether recession-weary voters are likely to approve going over the 1-percent-per-year increase in property taxes allowed under state law. The budget deficit stems ultimately from voters’ decision in 1999 to slash taxes paid on car licensing fees, Chris Grygiel of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.
