Now a Wyoming study shows that deaths linked to prescription drug abuse more than doubled from 2005 to 2008, the Associated Press reports. We're talking 103 deaths in 2008 compared to 50 deaths in 2005. The number of deaths caused by legal drugs in the state are now outpacing those caused by heroin or cocaine.
Put that in the context of a DEA official who says 7 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to a recent report in the Christian Science Monitor. Of those, more than 5 million are involved in the improper use of pain reliever such as Vicodin or OxyContin.
