Lynnie McIlvain

Lynnie McIlvain is a creative revenue development professional with a track record of securing six-figure government grants and strong competence in annual and major gifts.

What I Do
I lead InvestigateWest’s revenue development activities including grants, sponsorships, major gifts, annual stewardship, and planned giving. Additionally, I manage development administration and strategic planning. Day-to-day, I collaborate with community members and funders who want to contribute to the local news landscape and help them maximize their support of investigative journalism, so that they see the most impact from their dollars.

My Background
I was raised in the Pacific Northwest and am an alumna of Clark College and the University of Puget Sound, at which I was educated as a classical historian. My education as a historian has deeply informed my worldview and given me a responsibility to evaluate, contextualize, inform, and act with not only the past in mind, but the future. I am subsequently motivated by a deep belief in integrity and intentional societal change.

Before coming to serve at InvestigateWest as director of development, I spent five years in community-based and higher education fundraising.

Ethics and Approach
As a development professional, I adhere to the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) Code of Ethical Standards and the Grant Professionals Association’s (GPA) Code of Ethics. As a community-based fundraiser, I center impact and trust in my donor relationships and solicitations. I strongly endorse the approach of trust-based philanthropy.

As a person, the central value I hold is integrity, which refers naturally to the consistent choice of moral uprightness. Integrity by definition seems simple: do what is right; say what you mean; dwell on virtue. But integrity, due largely to its demand for constancy, should be admitted as the most difficult pursuit — and also as the only truly worthy one. It calls one to do the most good one can, and the heart of my personal ethical approach is in every instance, doing the most good that I can. Even in the face of fear, shame, inconvenience, and fatigue.
